Caves Carved Into Basalt Rock During The 2nd Century BC Located In India

In the town of Ajanta, there are many caves carved into basalt rocks, joined together to form Buddhist temples or rock sanctuaries, called Chaitya in India. It is believed that the caves were created in two phases: the first began in the 2nd century BC. and the second, from 400 to 650 AD.

But how could this stone be carved from one of the most difficult types of stone to work without modern technology?

Probably using a laser? Your thoughts..
