Visual Demonstration: The Power of Self-Hypnosis
A teacher walked into a classroom carrying a suitcase, took out a gas mask, put it on, then took out a bottle containing a liquid, opened it, and announced loudly—as loudly as the gas mask would allow—that the bottle contained a substance with a very strong odor and that anyone who smelled it should raise their hand.
After a while, the students in the front rows raised their hands, then the next rows, and so on. By the time the pungent odor reached the back rows, the students in the front rows began to feel sick. They started opening the windows to let in ammonia, as some students had fainted. Suddenly, the teacher took off his gas mask and drank the contents of the bottle. He explained that it was just tap water and that he had demonstrated the power of suggestion. … If he had said that the liquid was deadly, there would already have been fatalities.
