People used to be infected with malaria to cure syphilis. The man who came up with such a crazy but working idea was awarded the Nobel Prize. It was Julius Wagner Jauregg. Malaria caused a very high temperature which killed the syphilis bacteria. Then the patients were treated for malaria. At that time there were no antibiotics and syphilis was a direct threat to life.
